On the day Kylie admitted to getting lip fillers, google search for "lip fillers" skyrocketed.

1: Are there many kinds of dermal fillers?
Dr Chua: They are many different kinds of dermal fillers ranging from natural fillers to collagen simulators. Each type has its own advantages.

2: What are natural fillers made of?
Dr Chua: Natural fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is identical to that found in our skin. Thus there is very little risk of its compatibility with our skin. Natural fillers will be metabolised with time, lasting from 4 months to 18 months.

 3. How do natural fillers work?
Dr Chua: Natural fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which attracts water. As our skin ages, the hyaluronic acid quantity found in our body decreases, making our skin drier and more sunken. Natural fillers are injected into our skin to replenish the lost hyaluronic acid, thus “reverse” ageing by making our skin more hydrated and fuller.

 4. What are the areas that can benefit for dermal fillers?
Dr Chua: I presume you are asking about natural fillers. Natural Fillers can virtually be used anywhere on our face!

For firmer natural fillers, we use it more for sculpting – increasing the height of the nose bridge, reinforcing the chin, enhancing our cheek's definition. There are also natural fillers that are good for enhancing volume and support – our cheeks, laugh lines, marionette lines and temples. Softer fillers which spreads easily can give an overall hydration to the skin. They are especially good for the undereye areas: reducing the dark eye circles and undereye hollowness. They can also be used to hydrate the whole face – a hydrated face looks more radiant and youthful, while avoiding the "pillow face effect" which can happen when more volumising fillers are used.

 5. What type of face is most suitable for dermal (natural) fillers?
Dr Chua: All faces will benefit from some fillers, but the best and most dramatic effects are those with sunken faces due to ageing or weight loss.

6. What are the potential side effects of dermal (natural) facial fillers?
Dr Chua: Occasionally, slight bruising might occur especially when many areas are treated at the same time. Also, in uncommon situations when filler are pushed to the surface of the skin due to muscle movement, a small lump may be seen. Thankfully, an enzyme injection can instantly resolve it.

 7. What is the procedure for facial fillers like?

Dr Chua: The patient’s face is cleansed and if numbing is desired, we will apply numbing cream for 10 minutes. The patient will be brought to the treatment room, where the doctor will reassess the skin again, and mark out the region where the injection site should be. Fillers come prepared in a syringe, and the doctor will carefully inject the filler to areas where it is needed. Filler injection procedure typically takes 10 - 15 minutes. With numbing, a facial fillers procedure is very tolerable and almost all patients feel that it is less scary than visiting he dentist!

 8. Are there patients who are not suitable for facial fillers?
Dr Chua: Patients with very inflamed skin, and patients on blood thinners, are generally not suitable.

 9. Are there any treatments or activities that I should not do after facial fillers?

Dr Chua: Facial fillers procedure has no downtime. However, as it is still an injection procedure, we will advise patients not to drink alcohol and avoid exercises for the rest of the day. This is to minimize bruising as alcohol and exercise will increase the blood circulation to the skin. Patients are also advised not to exert pressure or do hard massage on the injected areas for a week. Patients should also avoid sleeping on the injected areas, and for non-surgical nose job, avoid wearing glasses for 5 days.

 10. Are there aesthetic treatments that I can combine with facial fillers for even better results?
Dr Chua: Facial fillers procedures are commonly combined with Botox, facial lasers, skin-tightening treatments like Ultherapy and Thermage. As each treatment deals with a particular skin issue, we find the aesthetic results of combination treatments to be much better than doing one treatment aggressively.

For example, Botox injection is very often combined with fillers injection. Botox injection relaxes facial muscles and reduces wrinkles of the face, while fillers injection can be done at the same time to hydrate and volumise the undereyes, cheeks and laugh lines. This heavenly match results in the patient looking not just younger, but also much more vibrant and energetic.
